John Vincent Gunsior, 84, formerly of Wyoming, passed away peacefully on Saturday May 10, 2014 at the Community Living Unit of the Dept. of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Plains Twp.
He was born on March 7, 1930, the first son of the late Benjamin and Lottie Kulas Gunsior.
John was a 1949 graduate of Plains Memorial High School. He joined the Army after graduation and was a U.S. veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired honorably as a Sergeant First Class after 22 years of service. Following retirement, he had worked for the Roth Novelty and Kay Wholesale Drug. Co.. John enjoyed spending Sundays at the Narrows Flea market and most recently , he enjoyed the activities provided to the Veterans by the VA recreational Department. He was happiest when spending time with his wife of 59 years the former Rose Sconda Gunsior.
John was a member of the Plains Polish American Club, the VFW, and American Legion Post 558, Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #16 and St. Monica’s Parish, formerly St. Joseph’s Church, Wyoming.
Surviving are his wife Rose, and his 5 children and their spouses, Leonard and his wife Carol Gunsior, Wyoming, Rebecca and her husband Phillip Worby, Hillsboro, N.J., Deborah and her husband Kenneth Bryden, Exeter, Michele, Gaithersburg, Md., and John Benjamin and his wife Carlene, Philadelphia.
He has 6 grandchildren: Joseph Gunsior,Craig and Nicholas Worby , Danielle, and Kenneth Bryden and the newest grandchild Luke Gunsior.
He will be missed also by his siblings, Betty McPherson, N.J., Carol Gilman, Fla., Rose Wetherell, Iowa, Peter Gunsior, N.J. and Leonard Gunsior, Va., and all his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Celia Sconda and Sophie Wetherell.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:30am from the Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00am at Corpus Christi Parish in Immaculate Conception Church, Luzerne Ave., West Pittston.
Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.
Relatives and friends may call on Monday from 5-8 at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made in John’s name to the Veteran’s Recreation Department of the VA Medical Center, Plains Twp.
