Johnny Hall, Jr., age 89, a resident of Columbia for 13 years, and previously of Severn, passed away on March 8, 2017 at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown after a two month illness.

He was born on April 9, 1927, in Salisbury, North Carolina, to the late Fannie Mae Smyre and Homer Cicero Hall. In February of 1946 he enlisted in the US Army, 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, and retired as a Sergeant 1st Class in the 82nd Airborne after serving for more than 10 years over three enlistments. In May of 1951 he was injured when struck by mortar fire during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and the Combat Infantry Badge. After the service, he worked for the US Coast Guard as a fiberglass finisher until his retirement in 1986. He remained active with the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 13, the Veteran's Administration, the Vergers Guild of St. Katherine Episcopal Church; and served as Chaplain Emeritus for the Disabled American Veterans and for the Military Order of the Purple Heart. During his free time he enjoyed taking pictures, volunteering for different functions in his senior building, such as playing music, making coffee, or just taking peoples newspapers to their door. He loved serving at St. Katherine Episcopal Church, and helping people in any way that he could.

Along with his parents Fannie and Homer, Johnny is preceded in death by his dear son David.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years: Ruby Hall; his three loving daughters: Barbara Pulliam, of Bear Delaware, Valerie Hall, of Brooklyn, and Jeanne Hall, of Norfolk, Virginia; his two devoted sons: John Hall, of Severn, and Joseph Hall, Sr. of Glen Burnie; 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, six sister-in-laws, three brother-in-laws, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family requests friends visit on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at the Gregory J. Gonce Funeral Home, 169 Riviera Drive, Pasadena. His funeral service will begin on Wednesday at 11:30 AM at the funeral home, with Rev. Allston Jacobs, Sr. officiating. His burial, with military honors, will follow at 1:45 PM in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville. Feel free to express your condolences below as well.

As a member of DAV, Chapter 13 I am saddened by the loss of Johnny. As a previous Chaplain of the chapter, no one could give such meaning to his prayers. He always checked on our members who were in poor health. Thank you Johnny.
