Donald Arthur Zake, age 83, a resident of Pasadena for 74 years, died on March 8, 2014, at the VA Medical Center in Washington, DC, after suffering complications from surgery.
He was born on December 15, 1930, in Baltimore, to the late Anna Marie and Arthur Henry Zake. After graduating from Glen Burnie High School, he enlisted in the US Air Force, serving in the 363rd Field Maintenance Squad from 1948 until 1954, during the Korean War. He then worked as a jeweler for Hochschild Kohn, before starting the family business, Zake Watch and Jewelry Repair, serving local merchants. A member of the Lord Calvert Golf Club, Poplar Ridge Senior Club, St. Jane Frances Senior Club, and St. Jane Frances Catholic Church and Community, his passion was playing golf, and he enjoyed weekly breakfast with his high school classmates.
Don is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years: Grace Anne Zake, (nee Jacobs); three children: Donna, David, and Diane Zake; his sister Amelda Corcoran; six grandchildren: Rachel Herrick, Jessica Gailey, Jamie Lupinek, Leah Geslois, Elizabeth Lupinek, and Courtney Lupinek; and two great grandchildren: Brody Gailey and Kara Disney; as well as a long list of family and friends.
Friends are invited to visit on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at the Gregory J. Gonce Funeral Home, PA, 169 Riviera Drive, Pasadena. The procession will leave the funeral home on Friday at 10:30 AM to go to St. Jane Frances Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM. His interment will follow, with military honors, in Maryland Veteran’s Cemetery, Crownsville.
