Mary Lauterbach
Of Millersville, MD
The family sadly wishes to announce the passing of Mary Cameron Lauterbach. This occurred after complications of congestive heart failure on Monday, September 10, 2012. At the time Mary was a resident at an assisted living facility in the State of Maryland. She had reached the age of 85 and suffered many debilitating conditions which rendered her wheelchair bound.
Mary was born in Decatur, Illinois, on December 19, 1926. Her father was the late Francis McIntyre of Marietta, Ohio, and her mother the late Luella Reimers of Ogden, Iowa. Mary attended Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa and attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City in the late 1940’s. There she met and married Carl Lauterbach of Sac City, Iowa. Carl was a World War II veteran who fought at the Battle of the Bulge and won a Bronze Star. He later became a clinical psychologist, rejoined the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Carl and Mary raised three children, Scott, Nancy, and Mary Carla while in the military. The family moved around the nation including a reassignment from Fort Benning in Georgia to Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. His final assignments led the family to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C. and to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Carl and Mary were very interested in the cultural life in Washington D.C. and around New York City. They loved going to plays, museums and musical events, at the same time exposing their children to the rich history of the region.
Mary pursued her artistic interests wherever she was and this included painting, clay sculpture, and collage. Late in life she especially enjoyed Philadelphia Orchestra concerts at the historic Academy of Music and later Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Mary was active with both Church of Christ in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Calvary Presbyterian Church in Wyncote, Pennsylvania. She was also active with Democratic politics and the election of Barack Obama in 2008.
Mary made friends wherever she went and has left behind many beloved ones. Surviving relatives include her younger sister Anne Irvine of Des Moines, her three children, and two grandchildren, Michael and Mathew. She will be interred in
Arlington National Cemetery close to her late husband Carl under a simple white tombstone.
