Born on August 15, 1946, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to the late Irene and Woodrow  Burkhart, he completed high school while serving in the US Army; serving in Thailand from 1964 until 1965, and then in Viet Nam until 1970. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Viet Nam Campaign and Service Medal, the Driver Badge with Bars, and the Purple Heart. After the war he worked as an industrial maintenance mechanic. The family invites friends to visit at the Gregory J. Gonce Funeral Home, PA, 169 Riviera Drive, Pasadena, on Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM.
