On March 9, 2015, Gilbert George Haney passed at the age of 86 years old. He was predeceased by his
wife of 63 years, Emily Ruth Haney (Dolly), and his parents Gilbert F. and Josephine. He was the loving
father of Skip Haney and his wife Carol, Barbara Macks and her husband Terry, Ken Haney and his wife
Marylou, Tim Haney and his wife Angie, and Dennis Haney. He was the grandfather of Jennifer, Jason, Raymond, Alexis, Jared, Tim, Nick, Josh and the late Dennis Michael Jr.; devoted step grandfather of Craig Macks, Odessa Armstrong and Tamera Foulk; proud great grandfather of Patrick, Cayla, TJ, Riley, Brayden, Sofia, Layla, Luke, Avery, Joshua Jr., and Emily; brother of Honey, Gloria, Delores, and Ray Haney who knew him as "Bud", and sister in law Mary Gillin.
Gil valued his Catholic faith, and education by sending his children through St Jane Frances and Mount St Joe and Spalding High School. He was a firm father who through example showed hard work was expected and winning in sports and life paid off. He loved all his 5 children, 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Born April 5, 1928, in Baltimore MD, Gil Graduated from Mt St Joseph high school. Gil and Dolly bought a waterfront lot in Pasadena in 1950. There he built a house for his family and extended family to enjoy fishing, crabbing, hunting and boating with a passion for sailing for many, many years. Gil worked for the B&O railroad for 42 years. He was the Riviera Beach, Marlins Little league Baseball coach from the 1960's until 1971. He coached for the buccaneers football program during this time, however Gil was most known for his love of wrestling starting at Mount St Joseph, then spending +25 years 1947 until 1972 as a member and wrestling for the Baltimore City YMCA where he competed all over the country.
Gil competed on the YMCA wrestling team from 1948 until 1962. He wrestled with some of the great founding wrestling team mates such as Ed and Vince Kelly, Kohlhafer brothers, Ernie Fischer, who was on the Olympic Team, and Fred Fromelt. (His message was to give back to the sport) Starting with his younger brother Ray. Ray Haney became an outstanding wrestler for Mount St Joe, University of Maryland and coached wrestling all his life. Ray was recently inducted into the MD and National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Gil organized the first Buccaneer Wrestling team in 1971. Many of his first team became State, MSA and National contenders. The buccaneers wrestling team was coached by his sons Tim and Ken Haney for 10 years, and remain a AACO great program.(His message to give back to the sport has touched thousands for over 65 years.)
Family invites friends to visit at the Gregory J. Gonce Funeral Home, PA, 169 Riviera Drive, Pasadena, 21122, on Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 AM in St. Jane Frances Church, with his interment to follow in Meadowridge Memorial Park.
