Gerrard F. Power of Everett, formerly of Scotland, passed away on July 24th after a remarkable battle with cancer. Gerry was the loving husband of Stefanina (Vittoria) Power of Everett, father of the late Thomas Power, Sofia Caloggero and her husband Jim of Nahant, Stefanie Hanlon-Dubois and her husband Joe of Everett, Kathryn Victoria Carty and her husband Keith of Lynnfield, beloved grandfather of Joseph Caloggero, Jason Caloggero, Thomas Hanlon, Evan Carty, Emily Carty and Adam Carty. Funeral from the Salvatore Rocco and Sons Funeral Home, 331 Main St., Everett, Wednesday, July 29, 2015, Funeral Mass at the St. Anthony Church, Everett at 10:00 AM.  Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday, July 28, from 4-8 PM. Complimentary valet parking will be available during Tuesday's visiting hours.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Gerry was one of eight children and loved his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews very much.  He came to the United States with his wife, Stefanina in 1957. He equally loved her family and their many friends.  He served in the Armed Forces and then earned his Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University.  He worked in several research labs at MIT beginning in 1970 until his retirement.  Gerry loved to work, and he loved MIT.   Because of his love for the institution and his many friends, he continued to work there on a part-time basis until he passed away.

Gerry was a very healthy, active man.  He was a runner and continued to run until recently.  He ran in several marathons, including the Marine Core Marathon in Washington DC.  He loved to swim, bike and spend time at the gym at MIT.  He enjoyed early mornings running, biking and walking along the Charles River where he met many friends.

Stuart Scott said, “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer.  You beat cancer by how you live.”  Gerry is an inspiration to us all. He lived his life to the fullest with kindness, love and devotion to his family.  He never let his diagnosis stop him and he pushed forward until the day he left this earth. Dr. Sara Slater, the team of nurses and staff provided excellent care and were amazing to Gerry and his family. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Gerry’s memory to Mt. Auburn Hospital, Hematology & Oncology Division, 330 Mt Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.

I was saddened to learn of Gerry’s passing. I met Gerry when I started at MIT many, many years ago. My parents also knew him too from working there. He always had a big smile, a good sense of humor, and friendly kiss on the cheek. I will miss that occasional quick chat as he was heading to the garage leaving campus after a workout and I was heading into work. I send my condolences to your family for the loss of a wonderful man.
