Stanley Edward Makacinas, Sr Stanley E. Makacinas, a long time resident of Everett, died peacefully on July 8th at Whidden Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family at age 87. He leaves his wife of 64 years, Amelia Joyokonis, and two sons: the Very Reverend Stanley E. Makacinas, O. Carm. of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada and John and his wife Diana of Irvine, California. He was born in the North End of Boston. Known as a very friendly and caring man who would help anyone with any project. He could fix anything! He worked for many years at Houghton and Richards, a specialty steel warehouse across the street from Fenway Park, where many a foul ball would literally bounce off the building. He was the head shipper there for 30 years but that did not stop him from solving all the plumbing and electrical problems that may arise. The company never spent a dime for outside contractors to fix the hoists and building infra-structure as long as Stan was there. When his son John worked with him in the summer of 1962 he was chided by his resourceful father because he was about to reach into a keg of nails to seal a box due to be shipped that day - "We only use the nails from incoming boxes, so pull them and straighten them out." The keg was three-quarters full and was purchased in 1935! He eventually went to work for Amstar in Charlestown and retired in 1985. He joined the Coast Guard in World War II and was at Omaha Beach during D-Day. He joined in clearing debris and rescuing soldiers from foundering Higgins boats. Unbeknownst to him his brother Charlie, whom he had not seen since shortly after Pearl Harbor was landing on the beach that day. Unfortunately, Charlie was killed six days later by a landmine at Sainte Lo. Stan traveled to Normandy on the 50th anniversary in 1994 with his two sons and paid respects at his brother's grave in the US cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach. He proudly received Commemorative Medals for his brother and himself from the French government in a ceremony in Caen, France. Funeral from the Salvatore Rocco & Sons Funeral Home, 331 Main St., EVERETT, on Wed., July 11 at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church, Everett at 10 a.m. Relatives & friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday only 4-8 p.m. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
