Marian “June” Cord, 98, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at Ashford Place.
She was born September 21, 1921 in Shelbyville, Indiana, the daughter of Morris Glenn and Eva Mural (Thurston) Cole. On May 15, 1943 she married Ralph Thomas “Chub” Cord and he preceded her in death on July 26, 1992.
June is survived by her dear friend Vern Havens, sons Thomas J. Cord and wife Joyce of Greenwood, John D. Cord and wife Gwen of Columbus, daughters Susan Birmingham of Kirkwood, MO, Jane Crady of Waldron and Lisa Taylor of Clearwater, FL., 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to Ralph, June was preceded in death by her parents, brother Vance Cole, sister Deanie Howard, infant granddaughter Rhonda Chambers, son-in-law Bill Birmingham and grandson Jason Birmingham.
June was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, St. Joe Social Club and a member of the choir for many years.
June loved being a housewife and raising her five children. She and Ralph enjoyed golf, fishing and traveling. June relished her poker nights with her girlfriends. After Ralph died, June decided that she had been given a good life and that it was her time to give back. She became a dedicated volunteer for Hospice, Shelby County Cancer Society, Major Hospital and Benesse Oncology, serving for 27 years.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, December 13, 2019 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Home, 703 S. Harrison Street, Shelbyville, with The Rosary at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at St. Joseph Church with Fr. Mike Keucher officiating and her son Deacon John Cord assisting. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Shelbyville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shelby County Cancer Society or Shelby County St. Vincent de Paul, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
