Carl Leonard Thiede, 96 died on February 27, 2011, in Lancaster,Wi. He was born in Richland County Wi., on October 14, 1914, the only child of Fred and Veda (Weldy) Thiede. Both the Weldy and Thiede families were early settlers in Southwestern Wi. A Weldy ancestor, Peter Kinder, was one of the two men who discovered Eagle Cave in 1849. The Thiede family immigrated to Iowa County from Germany in 1854.
Carl spent only six years in the Prairie Grade School before being advanced to high school at the age of 12. He was 16 when he graduated from Muscoda High School in 1931. He attended the University of Wisconsin and Played on the freshman football team.
He married Maymie Boak in 1935, and ahd three children. Barbara, Carol, Lisette Kay, and Carl Richard.
After farming in Grant County for several years Carl began a nine year career with Montgomery Ward and Company, the largest retail farm store and catalog company of that time. He rose to the position of Regional Supervisor for Farm Stores before he left the company to return to the family farm in 1949.
Located east of Muscoda, the Thiede family farm was purchased by his grandparents, William and Christina (Schlump) Thiede, in 1900. Carl became the third generation to operate the farm. The "Southern plantation style" farmhouse stood as well-known landmark in the area until it was raised when Carl sold the working part of the farm in 1980.
In 1957, Carl and Maymie puchased the Potosi Steakhouse in Potosi, Wi. During those years he served as village alderman and was active in the Tavern League of Wi serving as a member of the State Board of Directors for 10 years. Carl also served as presdent of the Grant County Tavern League.
Carl and Maymie retired to Boscobel in 1975, and enjoyed a second home in Pelican Lake Wi, where he indulged his passions for fishing and hunting. He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Milwaukee Brewers fan.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Maymie, in 1996 and his daughter, Lisette Karls Swanson in 2009. Family members surviving him include two children, his daughter Barbara (Ronald) Thomas and his son Carl R. (Margo) Thiede , five grandchildren , Col. Christopher (Helen) Karls, USAF-Ret, Dr. Jeffrey (Danette) Karls, Jefferson Thomas, Lynee Thomas, J.D. and Michael (Stephanie) Thiede, and four great-grandchildren, Aledandria Karls, USA, Sydney Thiede, and William Thiede. Other survivors include Eulaila Boak, LeRoy Adams, Dean Karls, Charles Swanson and Numerous Nieces and Nephews.
Funearal Services will be held on Friday, March 4 at Kendall Funeral Service in Boscobel,Wi. Burial will be in the Muscoda Cemetery. Relatives and freinds may call on Friday, March 4 from 1P.M. until the time of service at 3P.M. at the funeral home.
