Lois Rae Fields, died November 21, 2015. She was born Lois Rae Smith and grew up in Sheboygan. She moved to Worthington, Ohio, where she raised four children—Jenna (George) Hutchinson, Cynthia (Ron Wagner) Kohles, Laura (Scott) Windmiller, and Hans Kohles. She is also survived by three grandchildren -- Elizabeth (David) Kruger, Amy Hutchinson, and Brent Hutchinson -- a brother Mac (Sonja) Smith, and by a brand-new great-granddaughter Greta Rae Kruger.
In mid-life, Lois moved back to Wisconsin, to rural Gays Mills where she did many jobs that allowed her to live in the country. Eventually, she found a partner in Allan Fields and they have spent the past 26 years living a country idyll.
Lois had a passion for 3-F’s—Food, Flowers, and Family. She was a beautiful, kind, and nurturing person. Recently, she recalled that when she was in Brownies, they would sing this song and that she would continue to sing and hum it as she went home:
Sing your way home at the close of the day.
Sing your way home; drive the shadows away.
Smile all the while, for wherever you roam.
It will brighten your road,
It will lighten your load,
If you sing your way home.
I picture that happy little girl skipping and singing her way home. She was ever a happy person. And she is at home in our hearts.
A celebration of life will be held in the new Gays Mills Community Commerce Center in the Community Room on November 28 at 2:30. Memorials in her name may be sent to Doctors Without Borders, American Friends Service Committee, or Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.
