Schwingle, John A.
BOSCOBEL – John A. Schwingle, age 85, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison on June 6, 2012, surrounded by his loving family and friends after having a stroke. "Jack" was born on June 24, 1926 to Otto and Clara Schwingle. He married the love of his life, Mary Dolores Kelley, on March 28, 1951.
Jack was born on a farm near Basswood, Wis. and later lived on farms in the Boaz & Tavera areas too. He was the third of four children and was a farm kid through and through. He met Dolores through his sister, Joan, and they had their first date on New Year’s Eve in 1948. They married at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Boscobel and began farming, first in the Tavera area and then in their permanent home in Studenberg Hollow between Blue River and Boscobel. In their marriage of over fifty plus years, they grew together and managed to raise six children along the way too.
In 1956 Jack began working for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office in Lancaster. He later took up carpentry in 1964 for Consumer Lumber and in the early 1970s he started his own carpentry business. During all of these years he was still farming with the assistance of Dolores and their children. He stopped dairy farming in the early 1970s but then raised beef cattle and continued growing tobacco too for some time after that. He loved the fact that through farming he could grow something from almost nothing.  He never left the farm and always enjoyed feeding the calves, mowing the lawn, or whatever the day would bring.  He was always a big believer in the importance of a good day's work.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Otto & Clara, his three sisters, Mary Lyle, Joan, and Beth, and his lovely wife, Dolores. Jack expertly played the role of caretaker when Dolores was diagnosed with cancer and fought for her with all his might until she lost her battle in April 2004.
Jack is survived by his six children, Susan (David) Dax, John (Frances) Schwingle, Sara (Tom) Williamson, Patrick (Jean Marie) Schwingle, James (Marie) Schwingle, and Mark (Tony) Schwingle. He also adored his nine grandchildren, Shelley, Jackie, Becky, Chad, Ryan, Rachel, Casey, Hunter, and Sierra; and his eleven great-grandchildren, Kelby, Braden, Ella, Amelia, Charlotte, Emma, Caleb, Brooke, Melanie, Aubrey, and Calen.
Jack loved sharing stories and was rarely shy about sharing his opinions too.  We liked that about him, at least most of the time. He had great friends and enjoyed a laugh as much as anyone could.  He cared about his community, his church, traveling with Dolores, and most of all, the people around him.  He will be sorely missed.
