Bernard Richter
Bernard C. (“Boom”) Richter (“the Big Red gum man”) left this world to be
with his Lord on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. at Boscobel Care and Rehab.
He was born on Jan. 21, 1927, in Boscobel, the son of Anna (Kautman) and
Anthony Richter.
He worked for Oman’s Inc. as a sales clerk and for the government as a
temporary postal worker. He served in the US Army in the Korean War. He
returned to the postal service as a full-time mail carrier after the war. He
worked there for 42 years, until his retirement in July 1993.
When not working for the Post Office he would work nights part-time for a
gas station. He volunteered as financial secretary for the VFW, the
American Legion, and the Knights of Colum-bus. He also volunteered doing
poppy sales, Tootsie Roll sales, Salvation Army bell ringer, he helped out
at Badger Camp, the Boscobel Nursing Home, church functions, driving
people around, and the Tuffley Center.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, Wheel of Fortune, making people laugh, and all
sports especially the Badgers and the Green Bay Packers. He also enjoyed
passing out Big Red gum to every one he would met.
He was awarded Citizen of the Year Award in 2005. Mostly he loved being
with his family and friends.
He is survived by his three children, Kurt (Jill) Richter, Kristie (Richard)
Wagner, and Kelley Richter; six grandchildren, Katie and Tyler Richter,
Annamarie and Elizbath Wagner and, Heather and Nicole Richter; a sister,
Alice (Richter) Knutson; a brother, Jake Richter; an aunt, Mary Richter;
many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna (Kautman) Richter and Anthony
Richter; a sister and brother- in-law, Delores and Jules Waller; a brother,
Clarence (Danny) Richter; a sister-in-law, Zelda (Jake) Richter; a
brother-in-law, George (Alice) Knutson; a niece, Melissa Briggs; two
nephews, Russell and Roger Haney; and a sister and brother-in-law, Betty
and Jerry Haney.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m., at the
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Boscobel. Father Peter Auer will
officiate, with burial to be in the Boscobel Cemetery. Friends may call on
Sunday, Dec. 11, from 5-8 p.m. at the Kendall Funeral Home in Boscobel. A
Knights of Columbus Rosary will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Military honors
will be accorded by the Blake-Semrad American legion Post #134 and the
Gilbertson-Pitzer VFW Post #10393.
