Frances Susanne Gilhuly departed this life on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, in Trenton at the age of 91.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2015 at the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library in Trenton. Friends and family are invited.
Susanne was born on May 13, 1924, the only child of Lloyd R. and Vesta Yambert Han. After graduating from Trenton High School, she continued her education at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia. She met her husband, Capt. Fred J. Gilhuly, in Kansas City after World War II, while she was employed at a national trade publication. They were married at the Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, NC on Dec. 6, 1947, thus beginning her life as a Marine officer’s wife for the next 25 years. Susanne maintained her connection to the Trenton area, returning regularly to manage her agriculture interests.
Susanne and Fred returned to the Trenton area to retire, at which time she immersed herself in organizations that interested her. As her friend, Parman Green stated, “Susanne was a very active proponent of University of Missouri Extension. She was supportive and active in Extension’s farm business managing program and the Master Gardener program. Her support of MU Extension extended beyond Grundy County as Susanne was a regular participant of MU Extension programming in Carroll and Livingston counties.”
Susanne was also involved and on boards of the Grundy County Council of Aging, Friends of the Library, Antique Study Club, Grand River Garden Club and Trenton Women’s Investment Club. She was a volunteer in the Spickard School System and participated in bridge clubs.
Surviving relatives include her daughters, Theresa Ramsey and her husband, Peter of Shreveport, LA and Katherine Gilhuly and her husband, Douglas Todd, of Coral Gables FL; and grandchildren, Peter Dobson Jr. and his wife, Julie Richardson Ramsey and Fredrick James Ramsey.
Susanne was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Marine Aviator Col. Fred J. Gilhuly.
Susanne requested donation be made to the library.

Susanne was a dear, sweet, and amazing woman. I enjoyed the visits we would have when she came to the Extension office. She was the most delightful and creative woman - never a dull conversation with her. I am happy to have some wonderful memories of Susanne.
Please accept my condolences on the loss of your mother and grandmother. The community will miss her but we are all better for knowing her.

Susanne will be greatly missed. She was many things - Mother, Wife, Grandmother, leader, pioneer in finance, role model and a wonderful lady. She gave us the name of "The Glue Sisters", because she said we stick together. We join together now to say "Goodbye" to a special friend.

May you feel the outpouring of peace to all hearts in her passing this year. A discovery of a photograph taken in 1958 has Susanne's mother and father along with other family and friends with her standing bedside to my great great grandmother. It is Veterans Day tomorrow and I will be honoring the service your family gave to our nation. Blessed are we. In the spirit of God's love, Linda Kay Brown, daughter of Billy Paul Brown, granddaughter of Paul Revere Brown, and great granddaughter of John Nevin and Martha Alice Brown.
