Larry D. Barnes a 78 year old resident of Trenton died Friday, February 27, 2015 after a 7 year battle to overcome numerous health issues. Those of you who knew him, knew of his strength and courage to conquer this battle.
Larry D. Barnes was born October 6, 1936 in Richmond, MO, the fourth of 6 children of Paul and Fern (Bennett) Barnes. Raised in Trenton, Larry graduated from Trenton High School in 1954 and received an Honorary Diplomat from Trenton Junior College (North Central Missouri State). He married his high school sweetheart Coleen Crawford on June 4, 1956. They were blessed with three children Debra Elaine Hysten of Topeka, KS, Lynda Diane Barnes of Trenton, MO, Larry Dewayne Barnes of Trenton, MO. After an honorable discharge as Sergeant from the United States Army, Larry quickly established himself as a successful Retail Manager with promotions several times through the Midwest states. Larry then entered the insurance industry as an agent. When Larry and Coleen’s parent became ill he returned to his beloved Trenton community where he started the Larry D. Barnes Insurance Agency in a small office on Main Street. Larry passionately worked to build one of the most successful agencies in the Midwest. By the time Larry sold the agency 14 years later, he had well over one hundred agents and 33,000 clients. After the sale of his agency, Larry started Successful Sales as an Insurance Brokerage. The beautiful building Larry built for Successful Sales now serves as the home of Preferred Family Healthcare in Trenton. After retirement Larry spent most of his time with friends and family at his beloved 22 acre lake where he always returned with a healthy catch of crappie that would be enjoyed by all. Larry was very active and loved his community where he enjoyed giving back with donations for the expansion and Steeple of the First Baptist Church, to the donations to North Central Missouri College, one of them being Larry D. Barnes Insurance Agency Building as their main office building on campus.
Larry loved the outdoors and nature where he enjoyed many fishing and hunting trips with family and friends. From bear, wild boar to rattle snake hunting he enjoyed every adventure.
Surviving relatives include his 3 children, brothers, Bill Barnes of Trenton and Richard Barnes and his wife Sharon of Topeka, KS, and sisters, Dorothy Watkins of Princeton, MO and Janice Reinhart of Trenton, 5 Grandchildren: Mandy Barnes, Wendy (Jeff) Lamp, Katie Barnes, Jordan (Alicia)Hysten and Erin Hysten, 4 Great Grandchildren: Kelsee Herrington, Sadee Lamp, Michael Hopson, JoJo Hysten, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Virginia Atkinson.
