James William Overton, an 85-year-old resident of Trenton and a retired farmer, passed away October 27, 2014 at the Baptist home in Chillicothe, Missouri.
The body was cremated. Memorial services will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at the Tenth Street Baptist Church, Trenton, with Rev. Ron Ratliff and Rev. Aaron Stark officiating. Family visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 PM Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at the Tenth Street Baptist Church in Trenton.
He was born May 22, 1929 in Millgrove, MO to Guy E. Overton and Virginia Evelyn Bosley Overton. Jim attended Johnson Rural School in Grundy County, Hosman School in Livingston County, Jamesport School, and was a graduate of Trenton High School in 1947 and Trenton Jr. College in 1949. In 1948, Jim received a pilot license, joined the Civil Air Patrol, and was a member of Med-Vale Flying Club at Trenton. Jim was in the Air Force during the Korean War 1950-51. Jim farmed all his life. From 1957 through 1992, he also operated bulldozers for himself on the farm and for others.
Jim married Dixie Faye Hutson July 27, 1952 at the First Baptist Church in Trenton, Missouri. They were married for 62 years. The couple lived on their farm from 1952-2010 on the Grundy/Livingston County Line Road 500, off of Hwy W near Hickory, MO. They moved to Chillicothe in 2010, and then to Trenton in 2012. Jim joined the Shelburne Baptist Church in 1943 and was ordained a Deacon in 1975. Through the years, Jim served on various committees, as a Sunday school teacher, music leader, and helped with the sound system. He really enjoyed improving and redecorating the sanctuary one year. He also enjoyed helping cook breakfast at Shelburne for men of the North Grand River Baptist Association.
Jim enjoyed woodworking, often making gifts for his family from walnut and cedar wood from his farm. He was a woodworking 4-H Leader for the Pleasant Ridge Boosters 4-H Club during the 1990's. In his earlier years, he enjoyed bowling, trap shooting, and collecting toy tractors. In his later years, he excelled in experimenting and making soups and homemade candy and taking them to the Shelburne Baptist Church dinners. More than anything, Jim loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Dixie Faye, of the home, a daughter Lana Faye Boswell and her husband Don, two sons, Paul James Overton, and Mark Wayne Overton and his wife Lori; two sisters, Phyllis Robinson and Kay Staton and her husband Bob; one brother-in-law, Eugene Hutson and his wife Rocetia; grandchildren include Valerie Humphreys and her husband Tim, Melanie Baker and her husband Rusty, Justin Bland and his wife Jaime, Kadi Gamble and her husband Rod, Victoria Overton, Raven Stamper and her husband Aaron, Shaun Overton and his wife Norma, Carla Cooksey and her husband Cory, Carissa Mayo and her husband Michael, Desiree Foster and Carl McBee, Brandon Boswell and his wife Lauren, Tara Hall, Tiffany Limback and Kevin Sullivan, and 33 great and great-great grandchildren.
