Ellen Woods Spencer was born on June 25, 1922 at Laredo, Missouri, the daughter of Oscar and Nettie Brown Woods. She attended Laredo schools graduating from Laredo High School in 1940. Following graduation, she moved to Kansas City where she worked for the US Postal Department.
On February 17, 1944, she married Eldon F. Spencer of Trenton in Kansas City, Kansas. The couple lived in Corpus Christi, Texas while Eldon served in the US Air Force. They later lived in Colorado, Trenton and Laredo where they made their home until 1965 when they returned to Trenton. Mr. Spencer died July 17, 1966.
Ellen Spencer was a 17-year employee of Montgomery Wards in the women’s clothing department and was the department manager at the time of the store closing. Following this employment, she worked at Smith’s Men and Boys Clothing Store, Eleanore’s Flowers, Howard’s Department Store and the Grundy County Jewett Norris Library.
She was a long time member of the Home Rebekah Lodge at Edinburg and the Laredo Christian Church transferring her membership to the First Baptist Church in 2012. She also served as a 4-H project leader and Cub Scout den mother. She enjoyed embroidery, reading and most importantly, enjoyed spending time with her family.
Mrs. Spencer is survived by three children: Sharon Marnin and husband Don, Shirley Maxey and husband Steve, and Steven Spencer and wife Barbara – all of Trenton. Other survivors include five grandchildren: Greg Holloway and wife Angela of Columbia, Scott Maxey and wife Mary of Olathe Kansas, Shane Holloway and wife Lyndsy of Urbandale Iowa, Todd Maxey and wife Sarah of Olathe Kansas and Trisha Sharp and husband Scott of Trenton. Also surviving are ten great children: Hannah and Hayden Holloway of Columbia, Payton and Avery Maxey of Olathe, Mickayla and Isabella Holloway of Urbandale, Jacob and Ryan Maxey of Olathe, and Owen and Carly Sharp of Trenton. Additional survivors include one brother Payton Woods of Warrensburg and three step grandchildren – Shelly Boulware, Donny Marnin and Kimberly Westbrook and five step great grandchildren and three step great, great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister Margaret Housh; brother-in-law Leo Housh; sister-in-law Patsy Woods and one grandson Brian Holloway.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Trenton, MO. Burial will follow in the Stucker Cemetery south of Trenton. A visitation is scheduled from 7 until 8 Sunday evening at the Resthaven Mortuary. Open visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday. Memorial contributions have been requested for the Wright Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Women’s Shelter and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.
