Kathryn Loraine Shaw Cleeton, 89 years old, passed away peacefully at 1:16 PM, Monday, January 08, 2013 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She was a resident at the Silverado Care Center, where she had been living since July 2012, after having spent her life in Missouri.
The funeral for Kathryn Cleeton will be held at 2:00 p.m.  Saturday, January 12, at Resthaven Mortuary of Trenton. MO.  A family visitation will be held one hour prior to service time.  She will be interred in the Oakwood Cemetery in Milan, Missouri immediately after.
Kathryn was born in Trenton, Missouri on February 15, 1923 to Lyman Scott Shaw and Viola Gertrude (Ishmael) Shaw, with one sister, Mildred Maxine Shaw Binney.  A 1940 graduate of Trenton High School, Kathryn was affectionately known as “Pep” Shaw because of her enthusiastic personality. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1944 with a bachelor degree in music education, and during the course of her career taught vocal and instrumental music in several school districts, including Smithville, Milan, Jamesport and Chillicothe. She and her husband, D. Norris Cleeton, lived in the Kansas City area where he was a banker at the time of his death in 1968. They were married July 4, 1947, at Prairie View Methodist Church, southeast of Trenton.
Beloved by her students, Kathryn was an outstanding teacher, motivating everyone to try new things.  An accomplished musician herself, she played almost every instrument and had unending patience for finding talent in the most unlikely students, encouraging shy and otherwise reserved kids to participate in singing groups and musical activities that they might never have dreamed of joining. Many a farm boy or girl might find themselves in a group singing at state competition, and later comment that they would never have tried anything like that had it not been for Mrs. Cleeton.
Kathryn enjoyed auctions, crocheting, fishing, and her family.   She was close with her sister, Mildred all of their lives, and a wonderful and fun mother, grandmother, “Auntie” and friend.
She is survived by her daughter, D.Ann Cleeton Wright of Salt Lake City, Utah, and her daughter Kimberly Sue Cleeton of Trenton, Missouri; along with D.Ann’s husband Doug, and their children Katy Wright Buranek (husband Kris), and Ian Wright, also of Salt Lake City. Other close relatives include nieces and nephews from the Trenton area: Richard, David, and Jim Binney, Kay Binney Green and their families.
In addition to her parents, husband, and sister, she was preceded in death by her grandson Eric Paul Wright.
The family has suggested memorial contributions be made in memory of Kathryn Cleeton to the Eric Wright Scholarship Fund at the University of Utah. They may be sent or left at Resthaven Mortuary, P.O. Box 587, Trenton, MO 64683, or through the University website http://www.hinckley.utah.edu/ericwright.html
